The Literacy of a Newbie

Has anyone ever noticed how often people will type with numerous errors? Of course, there's the many examples of PMs and posts (or whole threads themselves) that don't have capitalization or even proper sentence structure. I was reading an email from a teacher that seems to be rather well educated, but while they typed up whole, reasonable paragraphs, they never seemed to capitalize or care if they spelled things wrong. My band instructors will mass forward emails and there are even more mistakes.

I know that if I'm typing to any adult, I read over my message numerous times to make sure that it's formal and straight to the point. However, anything I recieve seems like no one spent time on it because the replies are so illiterate. Does that ever make you think that the person didn't consider your request enough?

I know that people are buy, but it doesn't take that long to type things up correctly the first time, does it?

Do you check things that you write to people? How minimum does the value of the message have to be for you to not care enough about grammar? How important does it have to be for you to re-read it and check it fifteen times?

Please feel free to share your experiences.

    ^^^

I wonder why you titled this entry "The Literacy of a Newbie". To me, that implies that newbies type carelessly, when in fact, most people are like that....

    As for me...

I often help my friend edit her papers because English is her second language. Sometimes she sends these three-page-long essays and asks me to edit it when I have a ton of homework myself. stare Actually, I'm fine with that. What really irks me is when she spells stuff like "Vietnam" wrong or leaves words out. Obviously she couldn't be bothered to read over what she wrote because she knew I would change it for her. I don't mind helping her with grammar because that's hard for her. However, I can't stand having to go through poor and sometimes nonsensical work when it could have been easily improved if somebody had just read it over before emailing it to me.

The bottom line is that I really did feel like the other person was wasting my time. I really don't think there's any message I wouldn't check over what I wrote at least once (not 15 times, lol). Even if it's a casual e-mail to a friend, I make sure it's grammatically correct because I want to save the other person the trouble of having to decipher a typo-ridden message.

As for teachers, I hate it when they have spelling errors on worksheets, though sometimes I get the feeling that they honestly don't know. I had one teacher who always wrote "affects" instead of "effects" or vice versa. What bothers me is that the other students think that teachers are always right, so shouldn't teachers think about setting a good example?

P.S. Snow? You said people are "buy" instead of busy. ^^

    I'm guilty! *gonk*
No, I probably just read over it. Heh. Gotta defend my honor!
The title's kinda debatable, I think. It can be interpreted as either newbies are literate or that they aren't. Or that newbie's are illiterate...and those who have grown out of the stage are...still illiterate.
But sorry for playing on stereotypes. Dx
    I can't type...I'm on stupid mode!
