My goodness, for living in the middle of nowhere, Lord Lunar and his family certainly know a lot of people. All of us at the LO I've lived in for most of my life combined wouldn't have seen so many people in our lives, let alone known them!
And just how do I know that they know so many people? Quite simple, really.
They're holding a masquerade.
But it's not just any masquerade. A New Year's Masquerade. Apparently, one is to dress up as ridiculously as he or she can, whether he or she looks like a tree, a ram, or the batter in a cake bowl.
So, perhaps, I should describe the costumes that all of my acquaintences will be wearing tonight at this masquerade.
Someone's chosen to dress up like a four leaf clover. They'll be tall, skinny, and have the largest, floppiest, greenist four leaves shading the top of their head. I think that if it started to rain outside, this person would be the one I'd run to for cover. The clover's bigger than any umbrella I've seen.
Two people are joining together to look like a piglet. Actually, with the two of them, they look like an oversized sausage waiting to be cooked, but that's just me. A huge barrel makes up the fatty body, and the pig even has a huge head. I think it weighs 4 tons.
Another one wants to dress up as a giraffe. Quite ridiculous, don't you think? The eye holes are at the chest, the back feet drag, and the neck wobbles very, very precariously. I think the giraffe will be paralysed by the end of the masquerade.
And a group of people are going to be a centipede. Must be five people, each with two legs and all that. The circular body parts were quite large last I saw them, bigger than a beach ball. They kind of looked like green peas with legs. Fancy seeing that thing crawling in your backyard.
You should see the fan costume. It's rather flat, except the person wearing it has to hold their arms out and open the whole time to keep the material up and looking like a fan. Bend over to one side to pick something up from your left, the other way to pick up something from your right. It's so convenient, isn't it?
The least successful one was the flame costume. It's made up of all kinds of red and orange and yellow cloths, and said person wants to carry around a fan so that the cloth all billows up into the air! It looks like someone go paper mache'd when all the pieces are hanging down, however.
Of course, being a masquerade, part of the repertoire is to dance. I really do wonder how many people land partners in this kind of situation. How do they dance? Do they let go of their costume shapes to hold each other, or do they just wiggle around?
The thought's really unpleasant, actually.
I suppose we'll just have to say what they look like tonight at the masquerade. And when the clock chimes and the champagne rains down...

Ah ha! I had an idea. *races off to edit*
Oh, and by the way, if half of the story sounds like one person and the other half sounds like another, it's because I wrote them at two very distinctively different times.
