My Brothers' Essay... Tell him what you think!!
Ok, This is an essay that my, 17 year old brother wrote and made me read. Anyway, I decieded to share it with you guys because I thought it was really good for a 30 minute essay. Comments would be appreciated.... My brother oh so loves compliments.... Though he didn't really care if I put it on this website at all. *shrugs* oh well.

Here's the question:

1. Imagine that you are the editor of a major national news-magazine. What would you choose as the cover story for the issue that would be on the sewsstands on January 1, 2020? Why did you make this choice? Write the story.

AP College Application Essay

The headline read “Cancer has met its match: new miracle elixir created.” On the January 1, 2020 issue of “USA Today.” The astonished woman continued to read the article. “It has been confirmed that late last night scientists in Italy successfully created a vaccine for all forms of cancer. The scientists wasted no time sharing their discovery with the world, and the vaccine is currently being mass-produced in Europe, and will hopefully reach American shores by the end of the week. This vaccine brings new hope to millions of people who were otherwise going to die a painful death, suffering from the various different forms of cancer. It also brings new hope to the families of the victims, who can now finally relax, and enjoy their lives without worry. The vaccine is composed of…” The woman put down the paper without finishing the article and took a deep breath. “At last, I can finally relax” she whispered.

I chose this story because it has a lot to do with what I personally want to do with my life. Though this clearly is an extremely optimistic and, more than likely, impossible to reach goal, it is definitely something to dream about. Imagine – a world without cancer, a triumph of medical science, and a new hope for millions of people around the globe. What better goal is there to strive for?

This story combines two of my most cherished interests: medicine and journalism. As long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in medicine and becoming a doctor. I would watch television shows with my mother when I was young, such as “ER” and “Doc,” and be completely awed by what was happening. Even when someone I knew

was injured and taken to the hospital, I would still be fascinated by what the doctors and nurses were doing, and would envy them with undying respect and gratitude. That was when I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life: save lives. What could be more fulfilling than that? I’m not going to pretend to be so noble, however, by saying that doctors’ large salaries had nothing to with this decision. Even I have my nobility limits.

Writing has always been a hobby of mine. I would sometimes spend night after night writing a story in my room only to throw it out later after realizing how cheesy and farfetched it was. This didn’t stop me from writing them, though, as I wrote somewhere in the area of ten long stories in my time, and threw every last one of them away. This is what drew me to journalism, my joy of writing and my creative, if not somewhat corny, imagination. Admittedly, to this day, I sometimes write little stories in my free time, but the result is always the same. I guess you could say I’m just pushing myself to do better. And what better goal to aim for than being the chief editor of “USA Today?”

The woman walked home to tell her family the news she’d just read. She imagined the looks on her children’s faces, and how they would beam at their father once they heard. A tear came down her cheek as she smiled and thought about her husband, and about the brilliant scientists and the miracle elixir.
