James didn't have time to react to what had happened. Kayla was no longer in his arms. He looked around in confusion and then panic warmed over him. She was gone and Joanus didn't give him a chance to defend her. He turned to his room, but as soon as he opened his door a flash of white light surrounded him, engulfing him. When he opened his eyes, the white light was gone. He found himself in a field of some sort. Trees dotted along the side. It was nothing different than any place he had seen before. He wondered briefly how he got there.
He looked around trying to find Kayla or Joanus. That man had to have something to do with this. Somewhere in the distance he heard Kayla scream his name. He thought she was screaming for his help, but she wasn't. "Run away!" A hand clamped over her mouth. She bit it and screamed again. "James, just get away!" James frowned. How could he leave her here with that guy? Besides, he had a promise to fulfill; he was going to skin Joanus. He didn't know what on earth was going on. Kayla had a lot of explaining to do. It was obvious before that she hid things from him, and now he was being confronted by her secrets. Secrets, that he was beginning not to like, fast.
His mind raced to try and figure out what was going on, but it couldn't seem to grasp the reality of it all. This had to be a dream, he thought. Suddenly a sword dropped in front of him. It seemed to come out of nowhere and impale itself into the ground. He looked over at Joanus who had pushed Kayla aside, he had his own weapon drawn.
"I'm giving you the chance to keep your word," he shouted from the distance. James growled as he yanked the sword out of the dirt. He gripped it with both hands. It was not something he was used to. It wasn't his weapon, but it would do just as well to take the flesh of Joanus, he thought.
With a scream of rage James took off running towards Joanus. Kayla screamed and closed her eyes. Her heart ached for what was going to happen to poor James. Her James was going to die. He was going to die because of her. Tears streamed down her face. If only she could have been honest with him. If only she had told him what she was. Maybe he would have been scared off and left her and this all would have never happened.
When she heard the clash of swords she whirled around. James was standing his ground. How could he? Joanus was a god. How could a mere human stand toe to toe with him? It made no sense at all. She scrambled to her feet to watch them fight. Joanus seemed to have an edge over James, more then he should have been allowed. Her thoughts went back to James when they were in the kitchen. His eyes were darker than usual. He warned her that he was dangerous, but this was not what she thought he meant.
James had his secrets too. Now his secrets were being exposed because of her own.
Their battle raged on as Kayla stared, tranfixed by James' movements. His movements were fluid and lethal, but were only to be matched and blocked by Joanus' own attacks. James was quickly being worn down. Try as he might he couldn't land a hit on Joanus. It enraged him. He couldn't let this mad man win. He had to keep Kayla safe, even if he died trying to.
Joanus gained the upper ground when the flat of his blade met with the side of James' head. James yelped and tumbled back to the ground. His sword skittered away out of his reach. Joanus walked slowly towards him, with his blade pointed down at James. "Why do your risk your life for a woman you even know? Why would somebody so lowly as yourself care for her? You don't even know what she is."
James pushed himself back away from the point of Joanus' sword. "It doesn't matter what she is. A person as myself isn't good enough to lick her boots. I'm not good enough to lay eyes on her. She is the kindest woman I've ever met and I owe everything to that kindness."
Joanus wasn't really interested in the answer. It was rather pathetic, he thought. The man knew how worthless he really was. "If you were just some measly human I'd grant you a swift death, but that isn't the case he stated. "You'll suffer just like all the others who have fallen to my blade." Joanus raised the blade to his face. Steam began to roll off in waves of heat. The blade hissed as it turned an off white color.
Something there and then hit Kayla with a force so powerful it took the breath from her lungs. The wind whipped her hair back behind her. Her once brown hair turned silver. Black streaks lined her hair. Her eyes, once a pale grey, now shined as golden as the sun. Her eyes were on Joanus and his sword. She had remembered the sort of pain it could cause. She knew the sort of death it brought to its victims. This was something she couldn't allow to happen, not because of her.
James felt hot steel rip through his shoulder, he yelled out in unbelievable pain. His eyes shot open as his body writhed in hot pain. Every nerve in his body was on fire. He felt as if he was slowing being ripped to pieces. His vision threatened to darken. Just as he felt himself slip into the darkness the pain suddenly stopped. Joanus stood wide-eyed in half terror.
James heard the muffle yells and forced himself to open his eyes. He didn't understand what was going on. His body yelled in protest has he tied to sit up. Pain doubled him over and he fell face first into the grass. A moan escaped his lips. He summoned what strength he had left and pushed himself of the ground. He winced as he put pressure onto his wounded shoulder. He did Kayla no good laying in the grass, he had to get up and help her. When he finally managed to stand up straight he turned to find Kayla unleashing an asualt of attacks on Joanus. His jaw slackened.
Never in his life would he find himself to be scared by her, but he couldn't help it. Kayla was kind and laid back. What he saw of her now almost reminded him of himself. He watched helplessly in awe as she delivered flurries of punches and kicks that Joanus was having trouble blocking and dodging. Joanus flailed and fell to the ground, eating grass just as James did before. Kayla was ruthless in her onslaught of attacks. Blood covered her and Joanus. At this rate she was going to kill him.
"Kayla! Stop! Stop for Christ's sake you're going to kill him!" As much as he hated this guy for trying to kill him and take Kayla from him he couldn't just stand there and let her take a person's life. He didn't want to see her soiled in that way. He couldn't allow her to become the same as he. With a fist full of her blouse he yanked her away from Joanus.
It was a big mistake. Her wild, untamed eyes set upon him. He was half afraid she would rip out his heart and eat it while she watched him die. Joanus took this chance to attack her. With a fist full of her hair he threw her to the ground. James retaliated and slammed a fist into the other man's face. Joanus stumble back holding his face. He removed a hand revealing his bloodied nose. "I'll be back for you both," he growled. In a flash of light he was gone. Kayla was back on her feet ready to fight anything she saw; which happened to be James.
"Aw, crap," he muttered. Kayla took a swing at him, but her fist was caught in the palm of his hand. "Kayla. Kayla it's me, James!" Kayla relaxed her arm. She looked at him then up at the sky. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head as she feinted. James held her in his arms as the world around them went bright once again.
