Kayla woke up in a sweat and her face wet with tears. She had that nightmare again. The one where she had killed Rayden. She could still feel his hot blood on her hands and face. She had loved him, yet she had killed him. She didn't understand what had happened. She remembered fear and anger overwhelming her until she blacked out. Some how she had killed all those people and even Rayden. She was a monster. It was no wonder she was to be locked up in a prison deep within the Earth.
She had been stuck in her prison for hundreds of countless years. She knew nothing but her own loneliness and sorrow. No matter how much she wished she could die, she simply couldn't. There really was no way to tell how long she waited in that prison. Kayla was there until a man, a magic man came to free her. He had called her a child of the earth and that he knew of her from prophecies.
Kayla lived with the man for many years he was even able to teach her how to hide her appearance from others, as it brought the wrong sort of attention. Humans claimed her to be a witch and even some claimed her to be a demon or a she-devil. She was none of those things and all she wanted was to be left alone.
It was then she realized she was still in James' room, but James himself was nowhere to be found. She heard his voice in the other room. It sounded like he was cursing. Frowning, she stood up and walked out to find out what was going on. She found him there as she did this afternoon, staring at pieces of bread. It brought a smile to her face to see him there. He stood wearing a pair of jeans and of course his bandages. When he sensed her staring there, James looked over at her with a fustrated expression.
"Back to the sandwiches are we?"
"You never ate after you go home, and that a** hole showed up and scared me half to death." James sighed and walked over to Kayla. He pulled her close to him, holding her in his arms. He kissed the top of her head then sighed. "You don't have to tell me what that was all about, or what you are, or anything of your past. I like you for who you now." He placed a finger under her chin and lifted it so their eyes met. Her eyes were filled with tears, but she couldn't let them fall. "I promise if you trust me enough to tell me your secrets then I will trust you with mine."
Kayla looked away from him. "Maybe after we eat," she said in a meek voice. "I owe it to you, after risking your life for me." She smiled sadly. "I'm sorry you were hurt," she told him as her fingers graced his wounded shoulder. "I was afraid you were going to die," she admitted. "You're a special person James. I never met somebody so kind as you."
Now it was James turn to look away from her. "I'm not as kind as you think." He paused shortly and then changed the subject back to the sandwich. "So, what do you like between the bread?"
