Confessions
I never knew idle chitchat could be so intoxicating until Adrian. We discussed many things from political scandal to what was hot in movies and music. It was great just having someone to talk to about the little things; idle chitchat. It was something Drake and I never did, I realized while I listened to Adrian go on about some of his favorite new authors. As of recent, whenever Drake and I were together we really never talked. It was either a physical togetherness, or he would be watching something on the television while I tried to sleep. In the beginning we talked, but it didn’t last. Now that I look over what has happened recently between the two of us, I can see why. The real us would never have been compatible, but I didn’t realize that until we both took off our masks. I so wanted to be this perfect couple, one that my mother and society would accept. Thankfully I realized that this perfect existence just caused me pain and misery; which I learned the hard way, I thought to myself touching my hand to my cheek.
Adrian seemed to notice my dazed look when I touched my cheek and caught my attention by taking my other hand in his.
“Would you like a glass of wine, Gwen? It will help ease your discomfort and the vintage I found for tonight is delicious,” he smiled coyly.
“Oh that would be lovely,” I replied.
As Adrian went to the kitchen to grab some wine and check on the food, I found myself lost in thought. I should tell him about Drake and I; the whole story, I thought to myself. I just really need to get it out in the open; I can tell he already suspects something is wrong by the way he looks at me with the slightest amount of worry in his eyes.
“Here we are,” he says while handing me a glass of white wine, taking his seat across from me.
I looked at him with a hint of sadness as I took the glass from him, which he took note of.
“Gwen…I know something is wrong. I wish you would tell me so I could try and help you, but if it’s too soon I will leave the subject as is and we can just have a nice dinner together,” he said with concern in his voice.
“No,” I said a bit forcefully. “I mean, I need to talk about it. I can’t hide it any longer, especially from you. I should be able to share with you everything, and this is something that is hard to say but must be said, more so for me than anything.”
Adrian looked upon me attentively as I started to reveal my sad tale to him of the past couple of weeks. I told him about the reason I was out on the streets that night that he saved me; about the affair my fiancé was having with his secretary. I even told him about what was said between my mother and me the day we ended up driving off to his cabin in the woods. I finally finished up my tale with my realization of who Drake and I truly were and how we were living a lie of perfection; which ended with him beating my face. Throughout my telling the story, tears had flooded my eyes and I was not afraid or ashamed to show them. This was me, who I am; emotional. I felt a sense of freedom after telling him my journey to discovery. When I finally looked up at him for his reaction, I looked in shock to see the many emotions that crossed his eyes. I saw sadness for me, anger at what had occurred, and even compassion and caring for what I had gone through. I was so surprised that his eyes could express such a range of emotion at one time, but not as surprised at the feeling of Adrian touching my cheek gently with his hand and wiping a stray tear from my eye. I could feel and see how much he cared for me; my true and special friend. He then proceeded to take me into his arms to try and soothe away all the hurt I had been feeling inside.
“I’m so sorry that you had to go through all this; alone. I will be here for you if you ever feel the need to confide in me, or,” the tone in his voice suddenly changed to a sense of protection and promise, “if he ever tries to hurt you, I will be there in a heart beat.”
With those words I wrapped my arms around him and felt so thankful for meeting him that fateful day. “Thank you Adrian, for being my dear friend. You don’t know how much happiness it brings to me knowing you are there for me and I for you.”
He pulled away slightly and smiled at me. “Well I think the food is about done. Let us eat and enjoy the rest of the evening together.” I smiled and agreed.
The rest of the evening was extremely pleasant. The food was wonderful. I never knew a better cook. The company was delightful. I even looked back at my school years and regretted not getting out more and making friends earlier. There was so much I had missed because of school and then jumping right from that into an engagement. Now; now I had the time to make up for that which I am extremely thankful.
Adrian and I continued to talk for several more hours which would have continued if it wasn’t disrupted by the chiming of the clock which indicated midnight had arrived.
“Well I guess it’s later than I thought,” Adrian said while getting up to take care of our desert dishes. “You must be exhausted; it has been a long day for you.”
“Yes I guess I should be getting home” I smiled and helped him clean up a bit.
“Oh where are you staying now? You’re not going back to your apartment are you?” he asked with concern.
“No, I’m not ready to go back there. Right now I’m staying at a hotel near the hospital, until I can find a new place of residence.”
“Well what do you have planned tomorrow?” He asked which got my curiosity peaked, another date already? I thought to myself, unknowingly blushing at the thought.
“Actually tomorrow I have the day off.”
“That’s perfect then. How about you and I help find you a new home? How does that sound. I have heard of a couple of openings in the area and I have no plans so I could definitely help you look around.” He said as my face lit up.
“Oh that sounds like a great idea. I definitely want to find a new place as soon as possible so I can get my stuff back, and I don’t really want to move back in to the apartment that Drake and I shared.” I sighed.
“Well it is settled then,” he smiled at me as I gathered up my coat and purse. He walked me to his door and then looked down at me and wrapped his arms around me in a friendly embrace. I followed suite and hugged him in return. As we both began to pull away our eyes met and seemed to linger for a moment. My heart started to quicken as I leisurely looked into his gaze. There was a moment of understanding between the two of us which ended far too soon.
“Good night Gwen, and stay safe. I will see you tomorrow. Just come by anytime,” He said with a smile letting his arms fall to his side.
“Yes good night to you Adrian, and thank you for a wonderful night.” I replied shyly and turned away from him walking down the hall. I glanced back and saw him standing there still and I instinctively smiled and turned leaving his apartment complex.
