Notes Grow on Trees
I awoke the next morning, stiff and sore from the previous night’s confrontation. I made my way into the bathroom and looked upon the horrific sight in the mirror. Not only was the bruise very evident on my cheek, my face and hair were awful. I started to remember that I had cried myself to sleep that night, and decided that a shower would definitely do the trick to clean up the mess of release. I let the droplets of warm liquid fall upon my face, closing my eyes to embrace their gentle cleansing. The hot steam seemed to grip my skin, and seep through the barrier to refresh my soul. I then started to wash away all the grime and memories of my time with Drake. He was now dead to me, if only I could count on him staying that way.
After my shower I dressed in my scrubs and put my hair up. It was the first day in a long time that I actually was looking forward to my return to work. I wasn’t completely sure how it was going to go, and I hoped that my last experience would not stop me from performing my best. I just needed to get past the idea that I can’t save everyone and no one possesses that ability. If someone was able to, we wouldn’t need all these fresh new doctors, and the world would be extremely over populated, even more so than it was now. I glanced back at the mirror and looked at my battle scar. There was no use in trying to cover it up, so I left the hotel and walked to work.
The hospital was busy as usual, but I enjoyed it. It gave me no time to think, and thinking was something that I did not want to do; at least not today. No one seemed to really notice my bruised face. They were probably all too engrossed in someone’s exposed intestines to even take a gander. I was perfectly fine with not having to deal with their stares and the questions that I knew would follow. There was one part of my day that I did look forward to; my break. I was hoping that Adrian would remember his promise, and that I would see his happy face as I walked outside and into the summery park.
Luckily for me break time came sooner than I thought, and I practically skipped as I went to the exit. As I opened the door I was blinded by the bright sun trying its hardest to seep through any crack and light up the world. As my eyes adjusted to the brightness of the sky, I looked upon the empty scenery. There was no sign of Adrian anywhere and I could feel my heart sink into my stomach. I wanted to see him badly and let loose all the thoughts and feelings I had inside. I wanted to tell him all that had happened to me in these last couple of days. I wanted my friend here to confide in, but there was no one before me.
I sadly walked to the apple trees in the middle of the park and leaned against the slightly rough bark. Looking up, I stared at the pretty blossoms that covered the trees limbs, until I noticed something out of the ordinary. There was a note attached to one of the lower branches. Thinking it odd, I decided to remove the note and opened it. It’s addressed to me!?! Shock took over the disappointment I had earlier felt inside. I then proceeded to read the note:
Gwen,
I’m greatly sorry for not being able to go through with the promise I gave you. Unfortunately business has taken over much of my free time today. I do hope you can forgive me for not being able to come see you today, and I hope that you take in consideration of my next offer.
I was hoping you would give me the pleasure of your company by joining me for dinner tonight as an apology for my rudeness of leaving you a letter instead of being here myself. If you don’t hate me yet and would like to take me up on my offer then please meet me at my apartment tonight at nine. I hope you consider as I eagerly await your delightful smiling face.

As I read the note I could hear his deep voice speaking the words to me and I couldn’t help the smile that crept from my face. I knew that he wouldn’t have ditched me without giving me some idea as to the reason. He even cleverly came here while I must have been working and left this for me to find. His instincts were dead on by placing his note in the apple tree where we first met. I started to feel all these tingles inside as I read his offer. Of course I knew the decision right away. I, myself could not wait to see him again. There was so much I still did not know about Adrian the man. I’m sure he feels the same way too. This may be the perfect opportunity to get to know each other, and give me the chance to let loose the inner me still screaming to be unleashed. I feel like I can let that side of me go and he wont cringe away in terror of emotions. Around him I am comfortable and I feel ready to express anything to him.
I folded up the note and placed it in my pocket as I started to go back inside. I couldn’t help but think about going to dinner with Adrian tonight. What will I wear? I didn’t really have much selection when it came to nice clothes. I was only able to grab a few items and I wasn’t going for anything dressy. Eventually I decided to pick something up on the way back to my hotel room. I choose something semi-casual, nothing to flashy. Flashy wasn’t me anyways and me was who I wanted to portray; and I could finally let myself be that person inside.
I finally got home and put myself together so I looked half way decent. I took another shower in order to get the hospital smell off my skin. I put on my nice dress and dried my hair, leaving it down for a change; letting the curls encase my face. Normally I hated my natural curly hair and would always straighten it, but today I decided to embrace it. One last touch of a bit of eye makeup and I was good to go. The tingling sensation was back as I exited my room and made way to catch a cab to Adrian’s apartment. I’m glad he was smart enough to leave his address in the note, since I didn’t quite remember my previous trip to his place.
The cab made it to his apartment right at nine and I was happy to not be late. I tipped the driver and made my way to the complex. I wandered around looking at the number plates on each of the doors. As I find the one that matches the number on the note in my hand, I begin to feel nervous as I reach my hand out and lightly knock on the door. I stand there looking around until I hear the door begin to open and I see him standing there in front of me.
He looked different tonight but he still held that same familiar, mysterious vibe. I took him in with my eyes and noticed for the first time at how handsome he was. He was definitely an attractive man and I never seemed to catch that until now. My eyes finally made it to his dark captivating eyes. I loved his eyes the most. Every time that I even dare a glimpse at them they hold me in an unbreakable embrace. This time was slightly different. There was something else within his eyes tonight. As I pondered what it was he spoke interrupting me from my thoughts.
“What happened?” he said with slight worry in his voice as his hand came up to caress my cheek gently. The pain that was throbbing in my cheek all day was instantly soothed with his touch. I had almost completely forgotten about the past couple of days until he touched my scar.
“It’s kind of a long story,” my eyes still locked with his.
He quickly took his hand away and my skin begged for it to return. “I’m sorry, where are my manners. Please come in and make yourself comfortable.”
He started to back into his place letting me pass by. I started to look around his place, renewing the memories that still lingered from my previous visit. It was a nice cozy apartment. The fire was flickering its heat against the walls of the room, which made the room even more inviting. I decide to sit on his couch as I gazed around the room some more. Adrian was in the kitchen messing around with something until he finally came out causing my breath to hitch each time I laid eyes on him. I didn’t quite understand anything about what I was feeling except that I enjoyed his company tremendously. Adrian finally came over and joined me at the couch across from me as we both got comfortable for a long night of talking, food, and getting to know each other a little bit better.
