Bright fluorescent lighting revealed the path in which Detective Charlie had to follow the nurse. Hospitals weren’t his favorite places to be. The unnaturally clean look and the sterile smell of everything nauseated him to a degree that he would have to clear his mind of all thought as not to revisit with his breakfast. His dark work suit was a great contrast to the light, bright colors of the hallways.

“This way sir,” the nurse said and opened a windowless, wood door and let him in.


Beep. Beep. Beep. That’s all I could hear as I sat, staring absentmindedly out my hospital room’s window. It was horrible what had happened to me. All I could think about was, “Why me?”

“Don’t we all think that?” I heard. The sudden voice made me jump. I hadn’t heard anyone come in, but then, I couldn’t really hear, anyways. Any time I tried listening, I heard ringing. The ringing of a gun shot.

I looked at the man standing at the end of the bed. He wore a brown suit and a red tie with blue accents. His hair was graying brown and his eyes seemed like they could be a light blue. He looked like he was in his late 40’s. He gave me a sympathetic smile and said, “Hi, I’m Detective Charlie. May I ask you a few questions?”

“Sure,” I said weakly. The ringing made his voice dull and distant. He walked around my bed and sat in the visitor’s chair. “Look, I know you’ve been through a lot, but I need you to tell me what happened.”

“Well,” I said. “It started just like any other day.”
