I have just finished watching the Chobits series.. the anime that is and here is the summary I have written for the entire series, minus the ending wink
Imagine a Tokyo that is so technologically advanced that most people own walking, talking computers, referred to as persocons, which perform many of the tasks that humans once did.
Hideki, a country boy with no computer skills whatsoever, fails his entrance exams, and decides to live in Tokyo as he takes a cram course to improve his scores. When he arrives, he is amazed by the persocons, and wishes he could have one, however he cannot afford one. He rents a nice room from a sweet but quiet landlady named Hibiya and discovers that the boy next door is in the same cram class as him. While out on the street, Hideki discovers a beautiful persocon discarded in the trash bin. He takes her back with him to his room. After discovering how to activate her, he finds that she can't talk, so he names her Chii. Chii is unlike the other persocons that Hideki has seen. In contrast, she has no obvious operating system, seemingly learning from her experiences as a child would. Hideki finds that he must teach her everything, but he also finds himself attracted to Chii. He struggles with his emotions, reasoning that she is just a computer. A bit naive himself, Hideki learns of the ways of computers, etc, while teaching Chii daily life routine. Chii has a free will, unlike the rest, and starts to decide that she likes Hideki. Hideki does poorly in his schooling and is forced to get a part time job in order to support himself and Chii. Even Chii gets a job in order to help out, although Hideki tells her to spend the money on what she wants rather than for their bills.
Getting to know the people around him, Hideki finds that his friend is seeing the teacher after her husband fell in love with their persocon and ignored her. He also finds that the bakery owner (Chii's boss) was once married to a persocon. In addition, Hideki finds out that Chii is a special persocon called a Chobits, that was designed to have free will. Hideki struggles with this information as he finds himself drawn to Chii, but won't let himself love a computer. When Chii is kidnapped, Hideki worries about her and desperately searches for her until he finds and saves her. This makes him realize how much Chii means to him and he hugs her.
