Just an Average Day
As I approach the awaiting aisle before me, I can sense the electricity in the air. The Wedding March begins to play from the baby grand piano as the guests begin to rise. I feel flutters inside as I reach the aisle taking in the bright, cheerful view of inside the church. Someone takes my arm and proceeds to lead me down the mesmerizing aisle as if it called out to me. I view the many people with their smiling faces and I can sense pure joy radiating from their bodies. As I near the end of my journey, I see a man dressed in black, but the face is absent. “Who is this man,” I wonder to myself as I take his awaiting hand.
Suddenly a voice rings out, “Do you take this man as your husband from this day forward, to cherish, to love, through the good and bad times, as long as you both shall live.”
I look upon the faceless figure before me, while my voice takes on a mind of its own, “I…
“Gwendolyn its time to wake up”
Drake’s voice suddenly stirs me from my dream, a dream that has been haunting me for a week now.
“You silly girl. You really need to remember to set your alarm clock or you will be late for work again like yesterday. Luckily I have the day off.” Drake says with a slight smirk on his face.
As morning begins to wrap itself around me, I stretch to take in its warmth.
“I guess you’re right, I think the hospital would go into complete chaos if I was even a minute late,” I lazily state as I take the hot coffee that Drake kindly made for me on this early morning.
“And we wouldn’t want the best doctor in all of Chicago to be fired after only working for two weeks,” he says then pecks my cheek.
I look at him a bit puzzled. “You seem in quite a hurry for someone who doesn’t have work today.”
“Well sweetie, unlike you I remembered that we have a wedding that is going to be taking place in a couple of months, and being the amazing guy I am have started to make arrangements. I know that you are busy with work. So I figured I could at least help out with some wedding planning. Unless you have a problem with that” he looks to her as he hastily puts on his tie.
“I don’t have a problem with that,” I state as I get out of bed and grab some scrubs out of my closet. “Just as long as I get to pick out the dresses,” I laugh.
“Oh trust me, its all you when it comes to the dresses and all the frilly things that the brides love to pick out. Oh and don’t forget this Friday night we have dinner with the parents”
I cringe to myself at the thought of the gaudy dinner party that my parents are throwing Friday night, “That’s right, our engagement party. Are you sure we must attend?”
“Not unless you want to cause your mother a heart attack, I think it wise that we go.”
“Yes if we must, for my mother’s health at least” I sigh as I finish getting dressed and ready for work.
“Well I must be going my dear or I will be late for a very important appointment concerning whether to serve salmon or chicken to our guest” Drake says with sarcasm evident in his voice. “Take care and I will see you this time tomorrow” Drake kisses me knowing very well that is words ring true; my long hours definitely affects him deep down.
I say my goodbyes as he exits our small apartment, brimming to the ceiling with boxes ready to be moved into our new home; whenever we could come to an agreement on which one. I grab my already made lunch and medical case and head out the door and out into the awakening city.
The hospital that I know work at is a few blocks from my apartment so I choose to take the relaxing walk. As I walk, I can’t help to think about the past. I tend to focus much of my thoughts on the events that have led me to the place and time that I call my present life. Today was no exception, as I thought back to when I first met Drake the moments that led up to our engagement. We met while I was attending med school two years ago. I was a highly stressed individual at the time and decided to go the bar and get totally wasted so I could forget about the test I just knew I failed that day. This was definitely a bad situation since I had never really had much alcohol in my life. When I arrived at the bar known as “The Scream” I sat next to this good looking fellow at the bar. He looked to be average height and build, dark hair, goatee, and the most striking blue eyes I had ever seen. With one look by those eyes I was captivated. We introduced each other and began to talk about everything and anything that one could think of, and quickly found that we had much in common with each other. The only difference we really had was that he was going into business and I was going into medicine, but that didn’t stop us from leaving the bar and grabbing some coffee at a quaint and quiet coffee house down the street. “The Scream” definitely held up to its name. At the end of the evening we exchanged information and he was gentlemen enough to escort me home. I was instantly hooked. We spent most of every weekend that we had available with each other even after I started working at a local hospital. After about a year of dating, Drake surprised me at work. As arrived for my shift viewing the board as I usually do, I glanced and saw under my name the words “Will you marry me?” I was in shock as Drake came out from behind with the little black box carrying a ring especially for me to make it official. Obviously I said yes.
We made the most interesting looking couple. Me, on the shorter side with my long, wavy auburn hair and glassy green eyes, and him tall dark and handsome; almost the image out of a fairy tale. And this is how I felt. I felt like a princess who finally met her prince charming, life is perfect. Yet something about my dreams of late disturbs me. I don’t understand why the face of my groom is not evident. It has to be Drake.
I’m suddenly stirred from my thoughts as I run into the Chief of Staff Katie Nelson.
“You’re Late” she said with her normal annoyed manner.
I quickly step back and look at her with sorry written on my face “I’m so sorry Dr. Nelson; my alarm clock didn’t go off…”
“There is no time for excuses Dr. Richards, don’t you see that board behind me. Its full which means you have no time to babble at me all day, so get going and don’t let me catch you late for work again,” she interrupted.
“Yes, Dr. sorry Dr.” I hurriedly said as I hustled off to do my rounds.
My day went by fast as I did my usual rounds and time quickly rushed by and soon I was on my first break of the day. I head out side to enjoy another lovely spring day. As I walk out, a large breeze sweeps by causing the apple blossom petals to rain down from the trees. I stop suddenly to take in the view of falling flower petals when I notice a man leaning against one of the trees. Taken by surprise, I just stared at him, since normally when I went on break no one tended to go to the tiny park enclosed in the hospital’s back yard. I never really understood since it was such a lovely area to relax. I snap back to reality sensing that I was staring for quite sometime and decided to approach the stranger. He was definitely not part of the staff since he was wearing civilian clothes. He wasn’t bad looking by any means. He had dark hair with dark eyes that appeared as pools of ink. I had always had a fascination with eyes and as I approached him, it seemed that he was off somewhere distant; his eyes looked empty.
I finally got the courage to say something which I ended up squeaking out, “h-hello?” I said with a questioning tone. The man did not answer nor did he acknowledge my presence. I tried again to get his attention with no avail. I soon realized my ten minute break was up and that I better get back or Dr. Nelson would have my head again, so I started to walk away. I did glance back at the strange man with a curiosity and he still hadn’t moved his gaze once. I decided to let it go for now, its not like I will ever see this person again anyways, for all I know it was some homeless man that may have had some mental problems. So I returned to work, on time thankfully and completed my day, unfortunately my mind could not wander away from the images of the mysterious man. It continued to plague me even during my walk home from a long day of helping the sick and weary.
