September - Entry #1
Equivalent exchange? There's no such thing.
Journeys can only begin if you're willing to start them.
Shut up, Ria. Stop talking nonsense!
These were the words my grandfather was always saying every day whenever I talked to him about alchemy. He was an alchemist, and he always said there was no such thing as equivalent exchange because there's no equivalency. When I say I want to become an alchemist and travel the world, but never leave home, he calls me a wimp, a loser. Then he says that I can only journey if I'm willing to. Then, when my grandfather gets sick and tired of me talking every day about alchemy, he just says, "Shut up, Ria! Stop talking nonsense!" Sometimes, I forget that he was an alchemist.
When he gets fed up with my talk of alchemy, he keeps telling me the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, two brothers who tried to perform a human transmutation. It was the only thing that would shut me up.
"You could meet the Elric brothers if you wanted to. But you'd have to travel to Central." Edward Elric was the same age as me, but I admired his work. Most people would think he's different, but I don't. I could've met them; I could have, but... no one would understand me anyway.
Grandfather died on the thirteenth day of August, just one day before his birthday. It was a Friday afternoon, and I was just coming home. I had opened the door of the home and looked around for my grandfather. He'd usually be in the kitchen by this time, but he wasn't there. So I went up to his room and saw something horrible. Grandfather was murdered! I don't know who had done it, but blood was splattered on the walls, and my grandfather's body was laying on the ground. I wept, and vowed that I avenge him. But then I heard something.
'Shut up, Ria! Stop talking nonsense!' I lifted my head in confusion and looked around for whoever had said that.
'You'd kill yourself trying to avenge me!'
"Grandfather...?" I looked around wildly, trying hard not to look at the body. Because if I did, I would cry.
'Quiet, child! Stop your crying!' I tried to stop, but I failed the command.
'Why can't you follow orders!?' I heard an impatient sigh. 'If you wish to please me, Ria, journey to Central and meet the Elric brothers. Then, continue your journey to become an alchemist. But never become a State Alchemist, because they're Central dogs and they kill without thought. You know I was never like that, Ria. I was kind and unselfish back in the day. Hopefully, you shall do the same.'
"No, wait! Don't leave! I'll miss you!"
'Sorry, Ria. But that is the way life is.' Silence.
"Ria, don't go! We'll miss you so much!"
"Grandfather told me to go to Central and become an alchemist," I sighed. "I'm sorry, you guys, but I have to obey my grandfather." I hugged two of my wonderful friends, Eliza and Terry. They were twins and a few years younger than me, and I met them when someone had asked me to babysit their kids.
"Can we come with you?" Terry asked. I laughed.
"No... and besides, I don't think your parents would let me take you guys."
"Awww..." Eliza and Terry said together. I heard the last bell for the train.
"I have to go, you two. Bye!" I ran off, just barely making the train.
