Darkness. Nothing but darkness. Silence.
A slight shuffle was heard and then the turning of a doorknob as a thin ray of dim light entered the room and fell across the floor. It raced up the stone wall revealing bloodstains and deep groves in the wall that suggested the presence of a large animal. A chuckle was heard as hinges creaked and the once thin ray of light lengthened and then expanded into the shape of a doorway and illuminated the tiny room. The concrete floor was covered in different shades of reds and browns, old blood, and new. In the corner of the room was a small, tattered mat and two paper thin sheets that looked like they’d been through hell and back, nothing else. Two figures appeared in the doorway casting their longs shadows in the room but they were little more than silhouettes. One was tall and broad shouldered, obviously male, and the smooth lines that outlined his upper body suggested the absence of a shirt. The dim lightly that seeped into the room wasn’t enough to illuminate his features very well, but one thing was obvious, his skin was wicked pale. In his grip was a shorter, feminine figure, slouched and trembling, consequently making her shadow dance in short jerky movements.
With a quick flick of his wrist he tossed the girl carelessly across the room. He used more force than the movement suggested and a crack was heard as the girl’s body collided with the cold, stone wall and fell to the floor like a rag doll, she remained motionless.A chuckle bellowed from the man’s throat, “Sweet dreams, love,” he purred as he zipped up his pants and slammed the steel door, effectively making the girl flinch. She lay still now, pale lips moving in the darkness, a whisper carrying across empty space, “Five, four,” counting down the steps of the stair case, her voice quivering, “Three, two…” there was a pause, he paused, and then, “One.” The upstairs door closed and her captor was gone, for now.
The stone steps that led away from her room emptied into a hallway, the door resembling the others in the hallway allowing guests to presume it was simply another room. The pale man ran a hand back through his hair and chuckled as he walked leisurely down the dark, candle lit hallway. It never ceased to amuse him the way the girl always counted down the steps as he left, thinking he didn’t hear her. Pathetic.
It was really quite astonishing how easy it was to break her after she saw him kill that human male. Lucas or other, what did he care? The thought brought a light grin to his lips.Suddenly he stopped as a sound reached his ears. It sounded like crumpling metal and was soon followed by a splintering crack. The steel door, and then the wooden one.
His lips pulled back as he whirled around, silently cursing himself for keeping the beast alive so long. A deafening howl rose and crescendoed before dying down. The noise sounded painfully in the vampire’s sensitive ears. The shock was written on his face. How was it that a new wolf was controlling itself this well? What happened next was a blur, even for him.
A sickening snarl-behind him! He turned-a blur of alabaster fur and ivory fangs before-
-the deafening chorus of a metal song blasted from a small black and silver cell phone that lay innocently on a bedside stand. A gasp was heard through the dark and followed shortly by a light growl as a figure sat up in bed and snatched the phone from the stand and slid it open. “This better be good dammit,” growled a female voice, a bit hoarse and shaky from her dream. She glared at the blood red numbers that shone at her through the dark: three forty seven a.m. Nice. For a moment there was silence as the caller assessed her tone. Finally a chuckle came from the receiver before a smooth male voice responded, “Relax Sei, I’ve got a job for you: vampire, fifty k.” She was suddenly alert and raised a thin eyebrow through the darkness, “Is that so?”
