Sand swirled across Sarah's feet as she ran full speed down the streets of the Hidden Sand Village. She was late AGAIN and if she didn't get home soon her parents wouldn't be too happy. "aw mom's gunna kill me!" Sarah groaned as she checked her watch. It was 8:30 and she was supposed to be home at 8:00. As she passed a park a she sensed a wave sadness radiating from somewhere close. Sarah had a super-natural ability of being able to sense others emotions. She looked around to see who could be feeling such sadness. She spotted a small red headed boy alone on a swing a few metres away. Forgetting about how late she was she walked over to the boy and sat down on the swing beside him. "Hi there" you said smiling. The boy looked up at her in confusion. "Hi..." he replied. "My name is Sarah Osanagokoro! what's your?" Sarah said holding out her hand for the boy to shake. "Subaku no Gaara" The boy replied. Sarah smiled at him and asked "Why are you all alone?". Gaara looked away. "Why aren't you afraid of me?" he asked sadly. "Why would I be afraid of you" Sarah asked with a giggle. Gaara looked at her with a small smile. "because..." the smile turned into a frown. " Everyone think im a monster". Sarah looked at him sadly and replied "That's just silly ,how could people think you are a monster!?". "They just haven't gotten to know you yet, they shouldn't hate you!" She said angrily...as angry as a 8 year old can really get. She suddenly remembered how late she was. "Im so sorry Gaara I have to go! I am really late getting home and my parents will be mad." she exclaimed getting up from the swing. Gaara looked away sadly. "How about we meet each other here tomorrow." Sarah suggested with a smile. "Ok!"Gaara said excitedly. "See you then" Sarah called back as she ran full speed home.
Sarah waited on the swing for Gaara. She thought to herself about how people could think he was a monster. "There's nothing evil about him...if there was I would have sensed it when I first met him" she thought to herself "Could there be something else?" Suddenly a ball bounced towards her and landed on her lap. She looked up as a boy came running towards her. "Hey wanna play with us too" he asked taking the ball from Sarah. Sarah looked towards the entrance of the playground. Not seeing Gaara she replied happily "sure!".
For about half an hour Sarah played ball with the kids until one of the larger ones kicked the ball onto a nearby cliff. The kids groaned in despair. "Now how are we gunna play?!" A kid whined. Sarah looked back up at the ball and seen that a cloud of sand was lifting it up off the cliff. It brought it down and it landed in the hands of Gaara. Sarah turned around feeling fear and hate from the children. "It's the monster!" One kid yelled. "Go away monster no one wants you here!" Screamed another. Anger flooded through Sarah. "The only monster I see here is you kids!"She yelled to the kids. They turned around in surprise. "What ARE you talking about?" A boy asked confused. "Gaara just got the ball down for you! You should be thanking him not hating him!" Sarah replied angrily. "You kids are the monster not him" she repeated. The kid's looked at each other in sceptically. "Let's go...they aren't worth our time"The larger kid sighed. He started to walk away and the other kid's fallowed. Sarah shoot her head in disgust then turned back to Gaara. Tears streamed down his face. Sarah could feel his loneliness and pain. She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him. For a moment Gaara wasn't sure quite what to do then he wrapped his arms around Sarah. "It's ok Gaara don't listen to those other kids...they are the only monsters here." she whispered kindly to him. He hugged her tighter. Sarah could feel her shoulder wet with tears. Sarah rubbed his back gently with her hand and whispered to him "You don't have to be lonely anymore Gaara, I'm here for you...because that's what best friends do!". "Thank you Sarah-chan" He said happily letting go of Sarah. Sarah wiped his tears with her sleeve. She then looked at the ball lying not far from them on the ground. "Since those other kids are gone how about we play ball?" Sarah suggested happily. "Ok!" Gaara replied excitedly.
They played for hours until they were so tired they collapsed. They sat side by side, Gaara holding Sarah's hand. "You know I've never had a best friend before"Gaara said looking at Sarah with a smile. "Really?"Sarah replied with a frown. "Yep...but now I do"He said smiling even wider. They at in silence for a few minutes. "That sand thing you do is really cool!"Sarah exclaimed picking up some sand and letting it spill through her fingers. "Really?"Gaara asked astonished. "Yeah! I wish I had Something to protect me...I don't have anything!"Sarah replied frowning. "...Ill protect you"Gaara said shyly. She smiled and gently rested her head on Gaara's shoulder. "Id like that..."she replied letting out a relaxed sigh.
They sat there and talked for almost an hour. Sarah learned that Gaara was the Kazekage's son and that his uncle took care of him. "Speaking of parents...I have to go home now"she said sadly. Gaara looked away. "...could I walk you home?"he asked looking back at Sarah. Sarah nodded her head happily. She took his hand and they started walking to Sarah's house.
