It is my belief that most people are inherently lazy. It is a natural reaction to exculpate oneself from work, if at all possible. I am sure that this had some use at one point, but no longer.
The fact of the matter is that the internet provides that outlet for the idle time which people make for themselves. A bit of free time is good, one cannot work all the time, nor learn, nor anything so productive. I myself have found myself in idleness, reading the insight of others in their journals or what-have-you into whatever it is that they are passionate about.
That is another thing. The act of writing itself contradicts the act of reading. Reading is passive. The intake of knowledge. As you read this, you are doing nothing productive, this is not helping you with anything. You are not learning anything you could not have come to with a little bit of thought, yourself. On the other hand, writing requires thought and a systematic approach to one's ideas, to form them into sentences and to aid the process of thought. As I write now, I am indeed only contorting my own thought into a conciousness and an intelligence beyond what I might have without its aid. Such is its purpose, concretion and communication of the contents of a mind. Anyone, given a bit of effort to create a logical train of thought, can take those thoughts to concentrate and to give them shape in ways to provide some of the aforementioned insight to one's mind. This could be embedded in the apparent innocence of fiction, or directly, as I do now, into some sort of article or journal, perhaps not written at all, but in speech, or in visual art, for art in any capacity is just that: the coalescence of thought into images.
That is the essence and example of writing. One must learn it before one disappears into debauchery and mindless conformity. You have your own mind, do you not? It is to be filled with thoughts which provoke more of the same, ideas which inspire more of the same, experiences which leave one with a hunger for the exhaliration of life. For that is living, the consuming and further searching of knowledge and experience.
Let us, for a moment, give you some familiar ground. Your RPGs, let's say. In one of these types of games, is it not the object to gain more levels (and the obvious financial and material gain which aids the ease of earning said levels)? The method of it is, ordinarily, to gain experience, though playing the game and doing whatever it is that you are meant to be doing in it, such as the mindless slaughtering of the creatures it provides. (This is another argument entirely.) Such is the nature of the gameplay. It is often possible, also, to go out and to gain experience in a party, and to share the experience with others. What experience has been gained, after certain periods, when one earns a level, will give you an opportunity to improve this or that statistic, again to make the pursuit of experience more efficient. One moves on to larger targets, as the weaker creatures become an insignificant gain, one craves the larger quantity of experience which can only be found in a more difficult battle.
This applies to us directly in the way that in order to think on a higher level, we must experience life as fully and directly as possible. By actively going out and doing something productive, it is possible to enrich and develop the quality of thought. Today, I have talked with dozens of people, drawing from them their own experiences, exposing myself to their viewpoints and their accomplishments in order to better understand them, and indeed myself.
It is a beautiful thing, just the chattering between two active minds, both seeking their own knowledge, feeding and feeding off of each other to get that. In that quest, one will almost invariably find others who are on the same path, who have seen what you have not, who can offer another view from another place. Experiences shape us into something new, allow us to change ourselves into something more than what we were before. We go onwards, pressing ever more towards that knowledge. What could we do otherwise? Once that path is set forth on, the pace can only increase. It is an addiction. The path which has no endpoint, no solid marker which tells that you have reached that final stage and there is no more. There is always someone else to talk to. There is always something else to do, to learn, to experience.

Today I was dragged, fighting tooth and nail, rage against the machination of the Empire of the Emoticon, back to this den of Evil. Now, I have been away for a long, long time. I hate this place. I am filled with loathing of its inhabitants, the dredges of human society. The rejected. The terrifying downward spiral which the Internet will take you down if you don't watch your step.
I am not here to save you, merely to observe. And I observe your impending doom.
Oh man, that was the most fun I've had all day. It's okay, you're all cool. To a degree.
