ACHILLES

-son of Thetis, a sea nymph, and Peleus, the human king of Phthia
-mortal/hero
-Thetis=very protective of her son
-she wanted to keep him from dying of old age
-at night she out him into a fire that burned of his mortal skin
-the next morning, she rubbed ambrosia all over his body to heal it
-ambrosia=food of the gods
-Thetis dipped him into the river Styx and held him by his heel
-the water made him invunerable except for the heel that Thetis held him by
-his heel=only vunerable part of his body

TROJAN WAR

-Paris=Trojan prince, son of Priam and Hecuba
-Paris took Helen away from her husband
-Helen=wife King Menelaus
-Menelaus=Greek king of Lacedaemon, brother of Agamemnon, Greek's second in command
-Menelaus sent an army to get her back
-He wanted people like Achilles to join his army
-Thetis didn't want her son to join the Greek army
-she didn't want her son to die in it so she disguised him as a woman and sent him to the island of Scyro
-Odysseus=son of Laertes, king of Ithaka, husband of Penelope, most strategic of Greek leaders
-Menelaus informed Odysseus to find Achilles to add him to his army

ODYSSEUS

-Odysseus sailed to Scyros because he heard that Achilles was among King Lycomedes' daughters.
-Lycomedes=King of Scyros, father of Deidamia
-Odysseus played a trick:
He sent out jewelry, treasures, and among that, a sword
The king's daughters looked at the treasures and jewelry but Achilles was interested with the sword. Then he knew who was Achilles.
Odysseus tried to reason with Achilles into going to Troy with the Greek army.

ACHILLES IN BATTLE

-Achilles was very successful in the war and killed many soldiers
-On the way to Troy, he stopped at Tenedos
