I went for a run today, a light jog, to keep fit and healthy. All was well, my pace was easy, the weather was nice and mild and the traffic was light. About half way through my route I slowed to a walk, to catch some breath. A woman with two children was coming down the path from the opposite direction. I moved to the side, to allow room for passage. Our pass was met over a messy piece of path, where the manhole cover is positioned in a dangerous tilt, so it somewhat sticks out to the edge of the path, which is already jagged and uneven. And just as we passed each-other, I stepped wrong. My ankle rolled and twisted and I lost balance, which sent me into a tumble. The kids saw the event plain on, the mother passed my shoulder just as I went down. Even if she did not see it, I had yelped in pain and the shuffle of my descent on the ground made noise as well.
Do you think a single care was given?
Not a blink. Not a twitch. The kids saw it and continued on without so much as a hitch of breath. When I looked over my shoulder, I saw that the mother had glanced back, but continued walking without a single thought of a pause.
A person trips and falls not half a foot away from you. Do you not stop at least enough to ask if they are alright? Common decency and courtesy would dictate to do so, you would think, yes?
Luckily my ankle seemed/seems to be alright, if a little strained. But what stung more than the petty scrape I got from the fall and annoys me more than the tension in my tendons, is the utter monstrous lack of care and compassion displayed by those who passed me.
