Does anyone else here still avidly read the classics? Or rather, any novels that predate the Cold War (pretty much any book we're forced to read in high school)?
I feel like it's just me; that we, as a people, are slowly tearing away from the golden age of literature. When the most noble art form was that of the pen, and the wealthiest people around with their fancy Ivy League degrees found nothing better to do all day than to gossip, golf, snort cocaine, and write.
I just see so many poorly written New York Times "Best Sellers" that would have comprised the infamous dime novels of the past.
Not all books are like this, because I still see plenty of outstanding literature being published, I just feel like it's a terrible, unstoppable transition that's slowly phasing out the beauty of the written word.

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.
