Breedables = Elitist Greed?
Wear Asbestos All Ye Who Enter Here.

Just because a person doesn't have a great deal of artistic talent, doesn't mean that their time is worth less than someone who does.

This is definitely true, but to a point. Picasso prices aren't paid for refrigerator galleries, although the drive and passion may be the same. The skill, the knowing, simply isn't quite there yet with the latter, and skill costs more with good reason, yes? You don't go to an intern for major surgery, and you don't go to a little one banging pots and pans for Mozart.

The comparison is not to trivialize the learning process all of us go through, far from it. It just takes practice and time to make the sort of works the sought-after artists here on the forum sell. I'm still practicing. Simple truth is you can't start out at the "top", IRL or in Gaia. You have to climb there, like everyone else....and no one knows that better than those "elite" artists do. Practice eventually makes what you find, and others find, perfect. That old saying rings even more true for artists, for they rely solely on their own inner fire, not wealth or circumstance. The shops derided here as "elitist" in Breedables have artists who have invested the time to drive themselves further. Nothing is stopping ANY artist from investing the same toward mastering their style except themselves. Some are just closer to their goals than others. My first artwork IRL sold for $16 dollars a page, to a small-press comic. Now, I've had rare instances my art has sold for over a thousand. How? I wish I knew. eek All I know is I scream at myself to learn from every doodle, every glaring error. No pain, no gain.

I've bought pets for as little as 250 gold, as much as over a million....an auction I did art for but took no profit from, for a friend who wanted a GMFC appointment. I love donating, fulfilling wishlists where I can. Johnny K. got six digits from me. xd Damn that hidden donation bar and his worn, winning smile. heart

But just like IRL, you need to make a living on Gaia way. Art seemed the most fun to me, because I'm a crappy poster, and deviantART sucks for feedback, in my experience. sweatdrop That I have managed to succeed at it doesn't make me instantly elitist, instantly selfish. For example, I actually co-owned a pet with NovaStrike before all this. Why? Because I won an auction she also wanted, and I offered afterward to make both of us happy....just because.

That brings the question of why the venom against these who HAVE worked to achieve the skills they possess for success. Impatience to succeed without paying the same dues? The envy implied against the so-called "haves"? The first post certainly brings to mind images of the "elitists" being dragged out to be guillotined. eek Or, it may be just another bizarre vendetta against we in this blacklist Nova posted before moderator intervention, or several other related blacklists between Nova and her friend _Shouko_. After all, this thread comes on the heels of my luck in being accepted by both the GMFC and Feien Fairies, two "elitist" shops.....and her own auction this past week had autobuys of....gasp! Angelic Minis and a Nitemare Scarf, not a "friendly" 50K. Actions speak louder than words, and the words you speak say a thousand times more about yourself than who you are speaking of.

Either way, NovaStrike's latest journal entry is an interesting study in contrasts:

"Equality. Kindness. We want a smile. And STOP BEING SO ******** SELFISH!"

neutral What's wrong with that picture?

Honestly? The elitism argument sounds so much like sour grapes that it isn't even funny. There are some people who are truly elitist. There are a lot of real shitheads in breedables (And on Gaia in general), and I make it a point not to associate with them. There are some people who are such arrogant assholes that you couldn't PAY me enough to take their pets. But they're not the people that are labeled as "elitist". "Elitists" are the people who get nearly everything they want. They have a Fa'e, or a GMFC appointment, or a LoTT, or twenty Betas. "Elitists" are the people who are lucky enough to be staff (and guest) artists for popular shops. "Elitists" are artists who have their auctions regularly autobought. "Elitists" are people who hold themselves to a high standard of coherency and writing ability in RP. "Elitists" are the managers, the staffers, the judges, and the patrons of popular shops. Many of these so-called "Elitists" are genuinely nice people who deserve nothing of the title that's been branded on them. Some of them made mistakes once; made a bad business decision or unfairly kicked someone out of their shop. Some of them mess up on a regular basis, but make efforts to right their wrongs. Honestly, it does seem sometimes that the SAME people get all the popular pets, and the SAME people win these pets by flashing cash. But that doesn't make them elitist. Many of them run successful shops of their own- through which many of these accusers have pets. Maybe if they spent less time screaming "ELITISM!", they'd have more time for actually getting to know the "elitist" owners of the pets they want. Maybe then they'd realize that many of these owners are genuinely good people. Maybe then they'd realize that everyone messes up sometimes (and that doesn't make them a selfish b***h). Maybe then, the B/C would be a happier place; WITHOUT a silly revolution and cries of "DOWN WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT!" Who would've thought that maybe THEY were the cause of a lot of the friction they're fighting to do away with?

I totally agree with you two. Not that I have alot to add to that, but it's not like ONLY the people who have millions of gold worth of items and stuff get those types of pets anyway. The shops and such hold writing competitions, raffles and all sorts of other ways to get them. Hell, I got my Feien for FREE because I was in the right place at the right time and was offered one from a breeding.

I know every once in awhile I get a little ticked off when someone comes along and ABs an auction for minis or something, but I also understand that they've been here longer than I have, or they've just worked ALOT harder at getting things and totally deserve to be treated exactly the same as you want to be treated yourself. It's not really their fault their shop is doing so well aside from their skills are truly amazing. It's the majority of Gaia that determines whether a shop will make it or not, because we're the ones that buy the stuff in said shops. I've seen auctions go for 100k+ and honestly, to me the art wasn't all that great. Then again, I've seen art that I thought was exceptional go for only about 20K. It just depends on who wants it and how the shop is advertised.

If somebody else's art is better than yours and they get more gold than you, well... just suck it up and keep on trying, don't quit and then go complain about how unfair it is that the other person is better than you. They've probably been doing it longer than you have, or they've been working HARDER at it. Oh, dare I say it? They've got some natural talent when it comes to that, or they just love it and that makes their pieces that much better. I mean, I'm happy for people who love to do what they're doing while being good at it, I wish I could find something like that for myself!

Anyway, my main point was not only millionaires get that stuff. The GMFC's last FS cost you only 1k to enter, and the last Feien writing competition cost only 500G to enter. Now tell me, who DOESN'T have that much? confused

Amen to that! Honestly, if it weren't for the kindness of individuals on Gaia I wouldn't be where I am today. For one thing, I wouldn't have my Ducky Hat. Someone knew that I wanted it and bought it for me out of the blue! Also, see this outfit? Yes, the kick-a** pinstripe one? That was Tara's doing.

She, and other Gaians, work their asses off to make other people happy... and then they turn around and get branded as elitist.

Maybe they're jealous? Who knows, all I know is that it's stupid. They must look beyond their own noses and see the goodness in everyone. I see goodness in my most hated of enemies, it's there. You should never judge someone based on their gold or pets.

One of my most loved pets I got for 250 gold in a flatsale. 3nodding Who knew pixel pets were so much fun?

At the same time, I simply adore Paine, whom I bought for 10k, Julia, whom was won in an auction for 8k, and Shippou, whom was bought for 5k. (Which reminds me, I need to get my rear in gear and update their journals. XD)

I admit to not having that much gold on Gaia, and I also admit to sometimes becoming frusterated with that, maybe even a little jealous. I'll be the first to admit that. Hey, we're all human here, right?

At the same time, while I may make comments like "rats, I wish I wasn't so effin' poor," I don't go around pointing fingers and screaming "ELITIST!" at the top of my lungs. With all said and done, what have you gained?

Two gold for posting the word "elitist" somewhere.

    Whoopie.

I can understand why Novastrike & co are angry. They feel jealous of those who have popular and expensive breedable pets.

There are many great pets who are inexpensive and fun. Sugar Fairies & Demon Hounds for example. You just have to look for things that please you.

Even if I sold my million gold items and bought most "elite" pets, I probably would not be happy.

Everyone always wants what they can't have. whee

I see both sides of this, it does seem that a lot of the same people keep ending up with the popular pets, which sometimes frustrates me, but it's not as if it's the end of the world. I don't realy mind it that much. xD

Blacklists suck, I have met several people on Gaia which I liked, who later turned out to be on several blacklists.

Because I'm not really making any point, I'm just going to ask you the question I had in mind, and why i posted in the first place:

    What are asbestos??! @___@

I just want to say how greatly impressed I am with how well you phrased your side of the issue. I guess in my own frustration, I've breathed those words 'elitist' and I just want to say how sorry I am for thinking it - but never once would I ever blast an artist/shop owner in words anything of the sort. I always try to remain respectful of the work they've done. I find it in poor taste those that feel the need to vent in someone's thread when something happens against their own frustrations.

You have a gift for words Tara and a blessing with the artist's brush, I'm glad I stopped by.
