A young woman runs away from her home in a small farming community to go to the big city. She is almost totally unprepared, with little more than the clothes on her back and a small bag with some food. Along the road, she encounters a group of Lakewalker patrollers, among which is a young male groundsetter, who notices the black gash in the ground of her abdomen, and is eager to practice his groundsetting skills, as he has been practicing under Dag Redwing Hickory and learning much about how Lakewalkers can work together with farmers. However, the young woman’s gash is a female problem, and the young man cannot help, so he vows to help her find a female groundsetter who can help her, and along the way, find maybe more than a healing hand for an old wound.

A young woman working at the hotel where a group of Lakewalkers are staying has injured herself, and a kindhearted Lakewalker offers to help her and set her ground to heal it. But, she becomes “beguiled” and when they leave, becomes unable to work, so she sets out to find the Lakewalker man who healed her, and reclaim him as her own. Once he realizes what happened, he seeks the council of Dag, who explains what happened, and the girl is set back to normal, and goes back home. But she still finds herself thinking about her experience with the Lakewalkers, and returns to find something deeper than satisfaction for her beguilement.
