Hidden Knight

Prologue

Kaden sat on his cot silently. He stared out into the dark of the bunkers, thinking of his lost partner, Calden. He had died when the French had attacked their scouting group early that morning. Now the moon was high in the sky and Kaden still felt the open wound of loosing his dear friend and partner.
“Kaden?” George, the man who slept on the cot next to his, muttered. “Are you still up?”
“I’m going to bed now,” Kaden replied quietly.
“Good. We meet our new partners tomorrow. Heh. We’re the seniors this time!” George laughed quietly.
“G’night, George,” Kaden laughed, pulling the blanket over his head and slowly drifting off to sleep.

Dawn came all too soon. Kaden rubbed his eyes as he sat up. Someone tossed some fresh clothes on his face. He pulled them off and looked up at a young man with stunning golden eyes and hair.
“Name’s Faris and I am your new partner,” the man, or more like boy, said, his voice barely broken.
Kaden blinked twice as he pulled the tunic on over his head. “I’m Kaden…” he said, standing and pulling on his new pants. He noticed that he was about a full head taller than Faris.
Faris blinked once before grinning, his eyes lighting up. Kaden blushed slightly, still staring at Faris as he strapped his sword to his waist.
“I need to get my-”
“-chain mail?” Faris laughed, holding out the heaving metal tunic.
Kaden smiled slightly as he took it from Faris and shrugged it on. “Thanks…” he muttered.
“George told me it would be a good idea to get it for you, he says you’re not a morning person,” Faris laughed.
“I’m not,” Kaden said.
This made Faris laugh again, and Kaden realized he really like Faris’s laugh.
“So, how about we get to helping outside? Knights aren’t supposed to sleep the day away!” Faris said, still grinning.
Kaden blushed again before something Faris had said struck him as odd. As he and Faris walked to the door, where Kaden’s shoes sat, he said, “Wait. You’re a knight?”
Faris raised a delicate eyebrow. “Of course. What? Think I’m too scrawny to be a good knight?”
“N-no! I mean, you just seem so young!” Kaden flustered.
But Faris was already laughing. “I am only sixteen. It’s an honest mistake. Everyone assumes I’m still a squire… It’s kind of annoying!” He said, punching Kaden lightly on the arm.
Kaden smiled. “Ok, then. But might I ask, how did you become a knight at such a young age?”
“My father is a duke. My brother became a knight before me, and when he died when I was six, I decided then and there I would become a knight. So I’ve been training since than. So, aye, you could say I was born into it,” Faris said, putting his hands behind his back and looking up at Kaden. “So how old are you and when did you become a knight?”
“I’m eighteen and I am not a knight yet.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“I’m not like you, Faris,” Kaden said, looking away.
“Oh, sorry. It’s just, when I was coming here, we stopped at an Inn where a young woman named Carolina worked. She said she knew a man named Kaden Gregon. From the way she spoke of you, I just assumed you were a knight…”
Kaden looked down at Faris and saw he was sorry for assuming things. Kaden realized he couldn’t stay mad at Faris for too long. “So, you met Carolina?” he laughed, ruffling Faris’s short golden hair.

Chapter 1: Open Box

Faris stood tall next to Kaden. It had been three months since they had become partners, and it was finally time for Kaden to be knighted. Faris fidgeted, and Kaden put a strong hand on Faris’s shoulder.
“Don’t worry! You won’t embarrass yourself or me!” Kaden whispered, smiling widely.
Faris was definitely worried, but not about Kaden’s knighting, he knew that would go smoothly. Faris was worried because she hadn’t had time to wrap her chest very tightly. She had woken up a bit late. Faris glanced up at Kaden and thought about what he would think if he knew the truth. If he knew that his partner Faris was actually a woman.
“Kaden, please step forward,” Sir Whitethorn’s voice rang throughout the camp.
Kaden stepped forward, and went through the tiring ceremony of knighting. Faris wasn’t really paying attention to the whole thing, since she didn’t have to do anything but stand there.
Kaden stood and walked over to Faris, grinning from ear-to-ear. Faris smiled back as they went to the armor room to collect Kaden’s knew sword.
“So, Ruther make you a good sword?” Faris asked.
“Don’t know, haven’t seen it yet. But he made you something,” Kaden laughed, his eyes glittering.
“Really? Really? Really? What did you have made?” Faris asked, jumping up and down excitedly. “What? What? What?”
“Well, he didn’t exactly make you something. I found an old sword, and he’s making it into a bit more modern,” Kaden laughed.
Faris grinned. They walked into the armory, Ruther walking out to meet them. “So, the new knight has come to claim his sword!” he laughed.
Kaden chuckled. “Yes, I have. Is it complete?”
“Of course!” Ruther said in his deep voice.
Faris looked out from behind Kaden, still a bit shy of the big armorer.
“Heh, looks like a little mouse has tagged along with you, Kaden,” Ruther laughed, nodding to Faris.
“Faris, stop hiding behind me.”
“I will if I can, and I can so I will,” Faris said, grinning as she walked out from behind her partner.
“Do you have Faris’s sword as well?” Kaden asked.
“Yes, I do. But there is something odd about this sword… I cannot seem to smelt it, or do anything with it! It cuts me!” Ruther laughed a bit, bringing out the wrapped sword. He laid it out on a table, then went back for Kaden’s sword and set it on another table.
Faris went over to her sword while Kaden and Ruther were going over Kaden’s sword. She picked it up, and unwrapped it, letting the cloth fall to the ground.
Kaden and Ruther heard a sword clatter to the ground, and they spun around to see Faris on her knees with the sword lying on the ground in front of her.
“Faris!” Kaden gasped. But something stopped him from going to her.
“Where did you find this sword?” Faris asked her voice quiet and hard.
Kaden and Ruther were suddenly a bit afraid.
“My-my father brought it home from a battle. He said he had taken it from his fallen comrade,” Kaden replied quickly.
“And did you ever think to ask him who this comrade was?” Faris asked.
“N-no. Why would I?”
Faris was up and had grabbed Kaden tunic front in less than a second. Neither Kaden nor Ruther had seen such speed.
“That sword was my brothers! Your father took it from my brother as he lay dying on that battlefield!” Faris yelled tears streaked her cheeks, and her golden eyes wild with hatred.
“I-I’m sorry, Faris! I didn’t know!” Kaden gasped, suddenly very afraid of his partner.
Faris dropped Kaden and turned and grabbed the sword, walking out of the armory. She stopped, and without looking back, she said, “Don’t follow or you will regret it,” she muttered, and then walked out of the fort.
Faris stopped a short ways away from the fort, putting a hand on a tree to steady herself. She finally let herself fall to her knees and cry until her tears went dry. She dragged the sword into her lap, stroking its shining metal.
“Pela, the cursed winged sword…” she whispered, not bothering to use her male voice. She knew no one was around to hear her. “My brother held you in battle. Is it just coincidence that you have come back to me?”
Images raced through Faris’s mind, her brother spinning her as a child, her mother telling her that she would have to marry an old duke, her father lying on his death bed, telling young Faris to reach for her dreams, and not are what anyone else told her.
Faris wiped the tears from her face and stood. It was then that she realized a French stood not ten feet from her, holding his bow string taut, an arrow pointed at Faris’s head.
“s**t…” Faris muttered, letting her sword fall to the ground. After that, everything went black.

Faris’s eyes fluttered open. She was aware that she was in a cell room, two men sitting and staring at her. She sat up, rubbing her head.
“Where the hell am I?” she muttered, looking around.
“Why were you masquerading as a male?” One of the men asked. It was then that Faris looked down to see that she was in a simple tunic and skirt, her chest unwrapped.
“s**t!” Faris cried, a blush rising to her face.
“Quiet down in there,” a man’s voice boomed from the other side of the wooden door.
“So?” the other man asked her.
“First, tell me two things. One, who are you, and two, where are we?”
“My name’s Liam and this is my brother, Calder,” the first man said, running a hand through his dirty hair.
“We’re in a French fort, being held captive. Apparently, their going to try and use you to get one of their men back,” Calder told her.
“Nice…” Faris muttered. “My name’s Faris. And I was masquerading as a man because women are not allowed to become knights.”
“But why would you want to become a knight? Wouldn’t your time be better spent becoming a good wife? Having children? Being a girl?” Liam asked, raising an eyebrow.
“That’s the reason I became a knight! You men always thinking your better than us! I had to prove to you all that women are just as good, if not better, than you idiots,” Faris said, swinging her legs over the bed and standing up. She swished the skirt around her legs. “Turn around,” she told Calder and Liam.
“Why?” Calder asked.
“Because I am about to turn this skirt into pants,” Faris said.
Calder and Liam turned around and Faris sat down and started to rip the skirt. She pulled a needle from behind her ear and used some of the thread from her skirt. She made quick work of the skirt, making it into form fitting pants.
“Much better. Alright, you can turn back around,” she told the two men. They immediately spun around to see Faris putting the needle back behind her ear.
“Why do you have a needle?” Liam asked.
“For this exact situation,” Faris said sarcastically. “Mainly for simple tasks. My belt isn’t that good, so I usually have to fix it.”
“So, you’re really just a… maid?” Calder asked, a bit skeptical.
“No, you dimwit! God, what did I do to deserve this?” Faris muttered, shaking her head.
“I said quiet in there!” the guard shouted again, making the three cellmates wince. Faris plopped down on her cot, covering her face with her hands.
“Hey, what fort did you come from?” Liam asked after a few moments.
“Fort Not Very Good Scouts,” Faris muttered sarcastically. “I can’t remember right now. Sir Whitethorn is in charge, if that helps.”
Liam and Calder shook their heads, Liam’s read hair flopping over his eyes and Calder’s light brown hair sticking up.
“Nope. I’ve heard of Sir Whitethorn though,” Calder said. “Supposed to have taken down a black dragon with just his sword.” He stretched his arms over his head and smoothed down his dirty hair.
“Killed a Jager while I was there,” Faris said.
“A Jager? You’re kidding me! Those are some nasty little creatures!” Liam laughed.
“Stupid thing decided to attack a scout out in the forest. Whitethorn came charging in, sword swinging, and sliced the things head off!” Faris laughed, before her smile faded and she stared at the low ceiling of the cell. “What were your partner’s like?”
“Foolish, rash, a kid,” Liam said, laying on his back. “He was a good kid, though… Like my little brother, honestly. He would always rush into battle without thinking about himself first. Probably why that volf killed him. Rushed in to save a young girl from having to carry that things pup. Volf killed him and took the girl. I still miss the dummy.”
“Well, my partner wasn’t exactly my partner. He was my squire. His knight died the year I became a knight, and since we were friends, I took him. We were best friends… He must think the French killed me… I hope he’s a knight by now,” Calder said, leaning up against the stone wall. “What about you, Faris?”
“Heh. My partner got knighted the day I got captured… He’s probably glad I’m gone. He gave me a sword that day… It was my brothers sword, his father had taken it from him while he was laying there dying. I ran out of the Fort to find some space. Yeah, I know, it was stupid. A Frenchy found my out there and shot my full of potion… I really hope he thinks I’m dead…”
