I have recently returned from the mission trip to West Virginia. This was my second year going, but this year was infinitely more inspiring than the last. It would be useless for me to try and account to everything that went on in the past week, but I will share what I can.
The fifteen hour drive down there was fun. We had a group of 10 people go, 6 in one vehicle, 4 in the other. We were all extraordinarily hyper and had a wonderful time in the van together just being silly.
Last year our group connected with the little kids very well through the VBS (Vacation Bible School). This year, though, we didn't get as much time to talk with them because the schedule for VBS prevented it. Even so, I felt like we were a wonderful outreach to the children. Most of them live miserable home lives and just need to be loved. It is hard to explain look of passionate joy in their eyes as we gave them a hug or were just nice to them.
We were also an outreach in the community through construction. This was a great time to improve the environment of the area while getting to know the teenagers around. I made wonderful friends over this trip that I hopefully won't lose contact with. Some of them went through really tough childhoods and I have first hand witnessed how it has affected their lives. One kid that I became really good friends with was such a big sweetheart, but he has made some bad choices in life. There are so many things I could say about the people I met, but I'm sure you are getting the idea. I feel immensely inspired by the way they plow through their struggles. I am in awe at how strongly they live their lives. I think I would fall apart in their situations.
I don't think I could be more glad that I went on this trip. I was not ready to leave when we did and I cannot wait until we return in two years. But until then, I have every intention to keep the communication line open with my new friends.
