The rain began dropping down from the clouds much harder now, almost as if it were applying three thousand pounds of force onto your body. The wind didn’t help much either; it kept blowing so it felt ice cold. Behind all the rain’s noise, I started to hear a small sploosh… sploosh… in the wet and watery mud. A few seconds later, I felt as if something was behind me. If the wind and the rain combined couldn’t remove all the heat from my body, this did. Not knowing who or what, it placed its hand on my shoulder. “You done being frightened yet?” spoke a soft voice. Whose voice was that? I can’t make his face out… “And you done guessing who I am yet?”
I turned around. Apparently, it looks like Adam is done shopping for groceries. He still wore his goofy smile. It brought back most of the warmth in my body. He pulled me off the ground. “Didn’t ‘spect this kind of weather here, did you? Come on, let’s go back to the house. Andrew must be waiting for me to yell at him.” I looked at him with a puzzled face. “He left you unsupervised, and therefore got you wet. I would punish him with cleaning his room and the laundry and washing the dishes, but he already does that all. Guess there’s nothing for me to punish him with.”
When we got back inside, Andrew was reading a small pocketbook. Adam signaled me over to the bathroom to wash up. I went back to “my” room, gathered a towel and an extra pair of clothes, and rushed off to the bathroom. Once I started the water, I couldn’t hear a single peep of anyone’s voice beside mine.
Outside, Adam walked over to Andrew’s side. He skimmed through the pocketbook for a moment, then handed it back to Andrew. “Andrew, I want to talk with you.”
“I want to talk with you too, Master. Why do ningen think that we’re unreal?”
Adam hesitated for a moment, then answered “Because they’re not used to all these fire-breathing dragons and potions in cauldrons. Think of it this way: They’re just an organization of ningen who haven’t developed to our state.”
Andrew had no hesitation to retort Adam’s comment. “Then why did you have to pick her? What good is she? She can’t even get out of the stupid rain! How can we teach someone who doesn’t even know the basic common knowledge stuff?! Why couldn’t we’ve picked her brother?! He won’t oblige to live the way we live!”
“Because Akito joined the Other Side,” Adam answered loudly. “He joined them before we could even get to him. The girl is just as good. When we have to fight, she’ll be just as ready as Akito.”
Andrew stiffened. “You mean… they already… Marked… him…?”
Adam nodded slightly. Then he got up from kneeling on the ground, and headed towards the metal door, and spoke. “Just get a good night’s sleep tonight.” Then he disappeared into the darkness of the room.
