This is the first page of records that will keep each and every important research event well documented in my own intimate details. I already have another research journal, but perhaps I should explain what makes this one different than the Top Secret one I keep in my lab's mainframe.
I had only recently taught Trisha, my faithful Hybrid companion, about most of the major holidays of our world. She was very exited about most of them. In fact, she even surprised me greatly when she walked all the way to Ian's shop to buy me this new journal. She told me it was to celebrate the Christmas she missed. (She was born two months after Christmas.) Besides being afraid of her traveling alone in Barton town, I was pleased to see how generous she is. I'm not sure where she got the money to buy this, but then again I think she has been talking to the other scientists about money. I wonder.
Well of course I showed my gratitude, and even teased her by telling her I already had a research journal. She told me that it wasn't like this one. "What do you mean Trish? Any research journal would be the same as any other. It would be precise, and descriptive of each experiment." She laughed, shook her head and said, "Yes, but there is so much missing from those notes of yours. You only write down schematics and technical data. What about the thoughts and feelings you have about every experiment. That also includes the events that happen in your life. If you write what you feel, rather than what you do, everyone will see you are more human than you are scientist. That is how I know you, and that is how I want everyone else to remember you."
She then gave me a compassionate hug. It felt like she was indeed worried about something. Was it me, or something about her? In either case, I decided to take her seriously. I will write down everything that I find important as far as my own well-being, and those around me. Let this be the first-hand perspective of the life of a scientist. No. The life of a scientist... that is only human.
