Pain is like the thorny rose
That I hold in my hand.
They all think they see it,
But they don't understand.
It sometimes comes like a surprise,
Like a stab in the back.
It's the feeling that you get
When your heart has turned black.
It can be emotional,
Sometimes physical, too;
I hate them both, and they hate me.
Pain is my hatred true.
Can they understand it?
Can family, friends, or me?
Sometimes I wish they could (they can't),
Sometimes I wish they'd see.
We all hide pain behind masks,
Our faces smiling bright,
But it's inside that we're aware
Sometimes it's not all right.
I looked pain in the face today,
And what I saw was frightening.
It hurt so much, but it was quick,
Like a sharp bolt of lightning.
For in the mirror, I realized,
As far as I could see:
That pain I hated, feared the most,
That pain I saw was me.
