In case you've been living on a raft in the middle of the Pacific, April 21 is the Queen's birthday, and as usual, she'll be down the local boozer with her mates doing tequila slammers and doing the ol' knees up to the latest Ashlee Simpson hit in a festive little party hat. Or at least we'd like to think so. Speaking of hats: Did you know that the Queen's Guards' ceremonial headgear is still made out of real bear skins? It's true! Her Majesty still insists that the skins of slaughtered bears be used for the hats (which, by the way, make the Guards look very, very silly).
It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one Guard's headpiece. The skins come from black bears shot in Canada. Many of them are shot several times before they die, and some escape the hunters after being shot and bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, their orphaned cubs are left behind to starve to death.
The Queen has the power to stop this slaughter - come on, she's the Queen! If she wants a Ribena Toothkind at 4 a.m., she bloody well gets it, so she can do something about this.
