QUESTIONS 6. What role did Native Americans play in the war? The Native Americans play as the helping hand. For example, the Cherokees joined the Confederacy, and they provided troops for the Confederate army. 7. Why is the Civil War often referred to as a war between brothers? There were families that were separated because one was on the Confederate side, while the other was on the Union side. Senator Crittenden of Kentucky had two sons that served on a on different side than the other.
8. As the war began what advantages did the South have? The North? The South had General Robert E. Lee and other talented officers. Most of the Southerners who fought in the war also had experience as they were accustomed to managing horses and bearing arms since childhood. Also, the South just needed to fight the enemy to a draw and stand firm to win independence. Fighting on their own soil was an advantage since they were very familiar with it. Defense was pretty much what they could have done. The North had its economy. With its navy, they managed to blockade southern supplies. With its sea ports, they got supplies coming from England. The North also had a lot of men on their side that included each state's population and the continuous incoming immigrants from Europe.
9. As the war continued what weaknesses did the South endure? The North? South had to endure lack of clothes, shoes, and other supplies. Transportation problems caused by the destruction of railroad track by the Yankees also caused hunger problems for the South. The North did not have much skilled or talented high commanders. Lincoln had to use trial-and-error to find the right officer. The North did not have much boys that were experienced as the South. The North had to come over to the Confederate side to conquer it and take it back.
10. Describe life for the soldiers in both armies.
11. Explain the "might-have-beens" discussed by the text. If the border states were to secede and the undecided states turned against the Union, the Confederacy would be at an advantage because they would be growing in number. If a wave of defeatism demanded an armistice the South would have won because the fighting would stop. If England and/or France broke the naval blockade, the south would receive some supplies, and an advantage would be to the South. If all of these happened the South would have won.
IDENTIFY 8. Union The Union is what left of the United States of America after the secession. This side mostly consisted of the North.
