The Perfect Birthday Present |

Mommy sat at the kitchen table. She had her head hanging down. It was early in the morning and the birds were singing brightly. Mommy had on a dress I hadn't seen before. It looked a lot like her white one with little blue birds, each no bigger than my pinky fingertip. However, it couldn't have been that one, this one was red and the design had rips in it. Daddy was taking a nap on the floor with a big, red, thin blanket to keep him warm. Quiet. "Don't worry, no need to get up, I'll get the stuff out." I said to them cheerfully. I went to the closet, opened the door, and got a chair from the table for me to stand up on to reach the presents. They were wrapped so beautifully that I almost didn't want to open them. I took them down and put them onto the kitchen counter for later. Then, I went to the oven to get the cake. Mommy had left it in there over night to keep it warm with the heat off. This was after working really hard on it all day, yesterday. There was so much frosting on it that it was hard getting it out without messing it up. It was white with blue trim and little roses with green petals. It was going to taste so good. I put it on the table in front of Mommy. I got the six candles from the drawer and placed them on the cake. Then, I took the match, lit it and ever-so-carefully, lit my birthday candles, just as Mommy had shown me to do. Oh, I almost forgot the party hats. Daddy had put up streamers in the house, just to celebrate my birthday. When there was one on everybody's head, I took the kitchen knife from Mommy's lap and cleaned the red off with the towel, preparing to cut the cake as I sang Happy Birthday. Before I blew out my candles, I thought to myself, I wish that we could always be together, just Daddy, Mommy and me. Then I cut the cake, careful not to cut myself or the pretty flowers. I put a slice on Mommy's plate and placed it in front of her. She wanted her cake so much that her face fell right into it. I put Daddy's slice of cake on a plate on his belly for him to eat when he felt like it. Then I cut myself a slice and began to eat. When I was done, I went to open my presents, being ever-so-careful not to rip the paper. I got a bike from Daddy, a dress and a necklace from mommy and they both got me this really pretty ring, fit just for me. It had engraved in it, From Mommy and daddy, to our baby girl. I put it on and cried in happiness. When I was done crying, I saw that Daddy didn't seem interested in his cake so I put it in the refrigerator for later. Daddy seemed really tired, maybe because there was a hole in his forehead making him sleep. I think that is where all of his worries were stored and when they left, he felt so peaceful, he just slept. I counted the rips in Mommy's dress, there were 23, each one was about 2 inches long, most of them were in her chest area, 5 in her side and stomach. The dress she wore was so pretty, being so bright and red. i just sat on Mommy's lap, taking a little nap. I didn't hear the voice at the door. It said, "Be ready men, there are two people dead in there and a little girl who just lost her family to a psychotic murderer. This is the worst present for a six year old girl."
