The Price of Adulthood
What price would we pay
To wake up one day
And not be a child?
What happened to
The girl with glossy ringlets and an ulfaltering smile
Who came to this park, ran around, swung for awhile?
Now she's a single mom in a rut
Paying a rent that's too much
And loving those kids and their grins
But grins don't pay the bills,
And, despite herself, a tear spills
Now she wonders,
Where did my childhood go?
He was a little league star
That now sits, rusty and dusty, at a bar
With a bottle always occupying his hand
As he regards life with eyes glassy and bland
Be a man, his father always said
Now he's hunched over,
He's drunk himself dead.
And last but not least,
The sweet girl who lost love at fifteen
She can't hide the fear in her eyes
That festers and breeds
From broken promises, forgotten deeds
She tries for her friends,
But even they can see, her heart won't mend
Now she swallows those silent screams
That slowly took the place of dreams
And puts the barrel to her head
She whispers, "Goodbye" to that long fought-off dread,
To her family, her friends, her hopes,
Her humanity.
And now you know, little one,
The price of adulthood is sanity.
