TOOK
Tooks were an influential Hobbitish family, living in the Tookland in the Westfarthing. The Tooks, because of their Fallohide blood, were (for Hobbits) rather adventurous, and tended to be leaders. The Thainship was hereditary in the Took family from the time of Isumbras I (the Third Age 2340), and Tooks were from time to time known to go off on adventures or even to become sailors. From the time of Isengrim II, the Tooks closely related to the Thain lived in the Great Smials. Took is an angliczation of the actual Hobbitish name Tuk, of forgotten origin.

FALLOHIDES
The Fallohides were the least numerous of the three strains of Hobbits. About the Third Age 1150 the Fallohides left their ancestral home on the upper Anduin, crossed the Misty Mountains north of Rivendell, and entered Eriador, where they mingled with other Hobbits. Because of their adventurous spirit, Fallohides were frequently found as leaders of tribes of other kinds of Hobbits. Marcho and Blanco, the founders of the Shire, were Fallohides, as were the Tooks, Brandybucks, and Bolgers. Bilbo and Frodo Baggins also had Fallohide blood.

The Fallohides were taller and slimmer than other Hobbits, and had fairer skin and hair. They liked trees and forests, and had more skill in the arts than in handicrafts. They were friendlier with Elves than were other Hobbits

STOORS
Stoors were the southernmost of the three strains of Hobbits. They were broader and heavier than other Hobbits, and were the only Hobbits to grow beards. Some Stoors wore boots in muddy weather. The Stoors were friendlier with Men than the other strains, and they preferred flat lands and riversides. Stoors were almost the only Hobbits to know anything of boating, swimming, and fishing.

The Stoors stayed in the Vales of Anduin longest of any of the three groups of Hobbits, but about the Third Age 1300 they went over the Redhorn Pass and settled in Dunland or the Angle. The Stoors of the Angle fled to Dunland or Rhovanion about a hundred years later because of the threat of Angmar. The Stoor settlement in Rhovanion was in the Gladden Fields, and survived until well after 2460. The Stoors of Dunland emigrated to the Shire about 1630, and settled mostly in the East and the Southfarthings. At the time of the War of the Ring, Stoors were common in the Marish and Buckland.

BRANDYBUCK
The Brandybucks were one of the most important Hobbit families of the Shire, containing a strong Fallohide strain. The family traced its descent from Gorhendad Oldbuck, who about the Third Age 2340 moved to Buckland from the Marish and changed the family name to Brandybuck. Ever after, the head of the family was the Master of Buckland, and, with his relatives, lived in Brandy Hall.

The actual name of the family was Brandagamba, which meant "marchbuck" in Hobbitish. Braldagamba, meaning "ale-buck", was not used, but Professor Tolkien has translated the name of the family as Brandybuck in order to preserve the original similarity between the name of the family and the name of the river, the Brandywine.

HARFOOTS
Harfoots were the most common of the three branches of Hobbits. The Harfoots were the first Hobbits to cross the Misty Mountains into Eriador, doing so about the Third Age 1050.

The Harfoots were the most typical Hobbits. They were browner than the Stoors and Fallohides, and also smaller and shorter. They liked best high-lands and hillsides, and kept the habit of living underground longer than the other strains. The Harfoots were friendlier with Dwarves than other Hobbits.

GAMGEE
The Gamgees were a Hobbit family of the Shire, originally of the working class. The Gamgees took their name from the village of Gamwich, where they came from; at the time of the War of the Ring one branch lived at Number 3, Bagshot Row, Hobbiton. The most illustrious member of the family was Samwise, who as the heir of Frodo and the son-in-law of Tolman Cotton was both well-to-do and influential; he was elected Mayor of the Shire seven times. Samwise's children included the founders of the families of the Fairbairns of the Tower and the Gardners of the Hill.

The name Gamgee evolved through such forms as Gammidge and Gammidgy, from the original Gamwich. The genuine Hobbitish forms were Galpsi, from Galbasi, from Galbas.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hobbits were one of the speaking races of Middle-earth, originally closely related to Men. Although created in the First Age, Hobbits were unobtrusive and lived in the Vales of Anduin largely unnoticed by other races until well into the Third Age. About the Third Age 1050 the Hobbits, who by this time had become divided into three distinct groups, the Fallohides, the Harfoots, and the Stoors, fled westward because of the evil in Mirkwood. In 1600, the Shire was founded, and soon almost all Hobbits came to live there or in Bree, although in 2463 there was a colony of Stoors in the Gladden Fields, and at the time of the War of the Ring there were wandering Hobbits.
Hobbits, although comfort-loving, provincial, and distrustful of the outside world, were in times of danger courageous, skillful, and relatively undaunted by great terrors. Toward the end of the Third Age, the Hobbits alone in Middle-earth (with the Men of Bree) used surnames. They lived to about one hundred years of age; thirty-three was considered the age of adulthood. They were also known as Little Folk and the Little People.
The Stoors of the Gladden Fields in the Third Age 2463 were matriarchal, and all Hobbits may at one time have been organized into matriarchal clans
Hobbits live in the Shire, dwelling most usually in underground houses or houses in hills. Some of their houses can range from being a short distance under thier "hill" to having several halls and passageways
Hobbits discourage excessive or adventurous behavior which is why many were surprised that Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin went on such an adventure as told in The Lord of the Rings
Hobbits are also called "Little Folk," "Little People," or "Halflings."
