A golden coin caught her eye. Before she could pick it up a boy darted out of the alley and knocked her to the ground.
"Finders keepers." He snarled at her and grabbed the coin.
The girl said nothing. What could she do? It wasn't like she could argue with him. She recognized the starving look in his eyes, it matched the one in her own.
The street rats had no other option than to ban together. They could either let themselves starve, that wasn't much of a choice, or they could band together. They turned to eachother for warmth and food. Often times they were hungry, but it didn't matter. They had a group, a gang if you will, of people who were just as hungry and were comforted by the fact that they were not alone.
This young girl, who was called only by the name of Moonlight, was part of a group called the mudrunners. They were better of then most of the other groups, and were nice about sharing their food. They even shared with other gangs. Moonlight didn't object to that. She was, like any other street rat, aware of how much their own survival was in the hands of eachother. It was that dependence that gave her the strength to carry on.
