The Great Heist
“Click,” went the radio as a mysterious man flipped the switch to turn it on. He chuckled as the radio gabbed about a new bank in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“This is the best of the best. No robber could ever crack this safe unless they had the blueprints to the building. The new technology we have could stop a robber in his shoes.” said an investigator being interviewed by the press.
“But what of this mysterious robber who has just successfully robbed the National Bank of England?” asked a reporter?
“He is no match for this new…” the inspector went on until the signal faded as the man drove his car down a road.
The year was 1959. The man exited his vehicle and looked around. He was tall, lanky, and had a hat that was tilted to cover his face in a mysterious shadow. All of his attire consisted of a black shirt, grey slacks, a dark black trench coat, and black polished shoes.
Slowly, he entered a shabby building that looked as if it had been shut down for years. There were six men inside the building smoking cigars, and playing cards. One of the men stood up and shouted,
“Who are you?”
“I am a client of your boss,” returned the man. “He told me to meet him in this building at this hour.”
“Follow me,” said the man who was standing, “My name is Dobbs. You must be the new guy the boss said he was hiring.”
“Indeed I am,” Said the man.
They entered a doorway which led to a well lit room with a desk and a man facing a fireplace. The man facing the fireplace turned around looking surprised.
“Ah,” said the boss, “Welcome to our humble abode.” The man looked around and saw a spider climb across his shoe.
“Very excited to be here, sir.” lied the man, “What business did you have for me?”
“Are you in a hurry?” asked the boss.
“No, I like to get to the point.” replied the man.
“Well then, let me not keep you waiting. We need you to rob this new bank.”
“Well then. What makes you think I can rob it?” asked the man.
The boss pulled out a file with the latest robberies in the past five years. Half of the robberies were successfully completed by this man. They discussed the ways to enter the building and how to exit it.
There was a knock on the door, and Dobbs walked in. He handed blueprints to the man and exited. The man opened them and gasped. He and the boss looked over the blueprints thoroughly.
“If we enter from the behind there will be a lesser chance of us getting caught.” said the man.
“True but we will have to enter it during the day time so there will be less people watching the back door,” said the boss. “What happens if they find you in the safe?”
“I will exit through that air duct by the entrance.” said the man.
The next day, Dobbs dropped off the man behind the building so he was out of site. Dobbs let a puppy go running towards a lone security guard standing outside the door. While the guard was distracted for a moment with the puppy, the man and Dobbs took out the guard. Dobbs handed the man a rope for the escape.
The man entered the building and looked around counting the security guards around the building that were in site. None of the security guards were in the route he had chosen the night before. He headed for the pathway that was the shortest. When he got to the doors leading to the pathways the short ones were sealed off. Sadly, he entered the longest pathway. As soon as he had entered the man stepped on a trap. His foot sunk into the ground and a gate fell from behind him. Slyly, he pulled his foot out and entered another hallway leading to a staircase. About halfway up, he heard two guards walking across a bridge to a hallway.
The two guards were talking about the secret weapon of the security system. The secret weapon was a listening device. It could hear the pitter-patter of a mouse walking. The man continued until he was on the same level as the guards were. He started walking slowly, looking around for any traps that the guards set. Then as soon as he was comfortable the guards shadow showed up from the corner of the hallway. The man quickly started to climb up the wall and cling to the ceiling.
As soon as the guards walked by the man jumped down slowly, and walked toward the next hall. Tentatively, the man walked towards the stairs. There he saw a microphone hanging from a wall by the stairs. He had to think fast before the guards came back. The man hastily untied his shoe and took off his sock. He crawled on his hands and knees toward the microphone. He shoved the sock onto the microphone so the sound would be diminished.
Quickly, he went up the stairs. Halfway up, the man saw the safe. His heart was pounding with excitement as he ran toward the safe. The man’s heart was pounding in his chest as he worked on opening the door. He put his ear up against the safe and turned the dial. There was a “click” then another. Finally the last click happened and the safe made an unlocking noise.
Slowly and carefully, the man pulled open the door. The only thing that he could hear was the squeak of the metal door opening. When the door was open the only thing he could hear was the noise a drop of sweat hitting the floor. He entered the room, and his face went pale. The expression on the man’s face looked as lifeless as the moon. There in the back of the safe was none other than the investigator who the man had been laughing at. He faced the man and said,
“Got you.”
